Firefighter (Basic Life Support)

Duties include, but may not be limited to the following:
Drives and operates firefighting apparatus to the scene of the emergency; and assists the driver/ operator in the required maintenance, tests the motorized fire apparatus, and makes minor repairs and adjustments as needed; Maintains a record of all tests and maintenance performed; Assists the injured by applying knowledge and training for such purposes and mitigates the presence or potential release of hazardous materials to protect persons, property, or the environment from the effects of a release; Establishes communication with responsible agencies to gain qualified assistance and technical guidance and plans/initiates the initial response within the capabilities and competencies of available personnel, personal protective equipment, and control equipment; Assists hazardous materials technicians and other hazardous materials personnel and maintains and decontaminates common hazardous materials response equipment and supplies including protective clothing, breathing apparatus, wet and dry extinguishing agents and equipment; Assists in the maintenance of up-to-date maps and drawings of all the fire-related equipment and responds to non-fire related incidents; Ensures all fire protection systems and equipment are inspected, tested, and maintained in accordance with applicable National Fire Protection Agency standards and VA requirements; Inspects, tests and maintains all fire protection systems and equipment; and Performs all other duties as assigned. Promotion Potential:
The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level. This position involves a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties represent the full performance level of a GS-7. At the GS-5 grade level, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of a GS-7. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher level work, and availability of funds. Work Schedule:
Full Time, 72 hour work week. The Fire Department operates 24 hours per day, 7 days per week in which employees are assigned to alternating shifts of 24 hours. This position is subject to overtime call back and mandatory overtime to ensure mandatory compliance with minimum crew manning requirements. Experience:
You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would include:
controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer or governmental fire department or brigade; rescue operations; detection, reduction or elimination of potential fire hazards; operation of fire communications equipment; controlling hazardous materials incidents; and/or developing, implementing or providing training in fire protection and prevention. Successfully completed a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree in an accredited college or university with major study in Fire Science, Fire Training, or other related fields of study? (A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education). This position also includes a Selective Placement Factor (skill, knowledge, ability or other worker characteristic basic to - and essential for - satisfactory performance of the job). Must possess an active and valid NJ or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician License/Certification. AGE REQUIREMENT (Maximum Entry Age):
For initial appointments, applicants cannot have reached their 37th birthday by the day of appointment. Applicants who have passed the designated entry age limit noted, but who have previously served in a covered position may be eligible to re-enter the fire service provided that they:
1) Meet all applicable qualifications for the position; and 2) Will be able to complete a total of 20 years of covered and creditable Federal firefighter service by the time the Federal firefighter reaches the age of 57. Prior service in covered positions and creditable towards retirement may be subtracted from the applicant's age to determine if the Federal firefighter meets the maximum entry age. REQUIREMENTS FOR MOTOR VEHICLE OPERATION:
For those positions requiring employees to drive motorized firefighting equipment, candidates must possess and maintain a valid State motor operator's license of the appropriate classification or kind. Qualifications:
For those positions requiring the operation of specialized firefighting pumping equipment, mounted pressurized systems, dispensing devices, and/or rescue tools, applicants may be required to demonstrate the ability, before appointment, to operate the specific equipment to which they will be assigned or similar related types of hydraulic equipment. PERFORMANCE TEST:
Agencies may require candidates to demonstrate satisfactory performance of the minimum physical abilities necessary to perform safely and efficiently the essential tasks of a particular position. MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
The work requires on a regular and recurring basis, considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing of multiple flights of stairs, running, lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds, crouching or crawling in restrictive areas during fire and rescue activities. Fire protection equipment must be worn or carried; the wearing of this equipment significantly amplifies the physical strain experienced by the employee during physical exertion or during periods of hot weather. Employee is required to undergo an annual physical. Employees are regularly required to work scheduled and no-notice periods of overtime. The work is performed both in and outdoors, with exposure to the elements. The environment regularly involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress that require a range of safety and other precautions (e.g. subject to possible fire conditions or similar situations where conditions cannot be controlled). Includes operations regularly performed in areas of extremely rough terrain with wide variations in climatic conditions. The employee must maintain emotional control when conducting fire operations or basic lifesaving procedures; and must exercise patience and understanding when confronted by emotionally disturbed of physically challenged personnel, or injured patients. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
