NOTE Incumbent must have the following:
New Jersey State NJDEP S-2 Wastewater Plant Operator's License AND New Jersey State NJDEP C-1 Collection Systems License The incumbent uses manual and automatic controls to operate a Wastewater Treatment Plant within the Operations Section of Facilities Management Service at VA NJHCS, Lyons Campus. The incumbent's primary duties are as a NJDEP S-2 Licensed Wastewater Plant Operator. The employee operates an extended aeration, activated sludge wastewater treatment plant with a design capacity of 1,000,000 gallons per day (GPO), serving a population of approximately 2,500. The incumbent may be required to make decisions and changes to the plant configuration and system processes to ensure safe, efficient and uninterrupted operations. This is required to prevent damage to equipment and the environment, injury and loss of life. Duties include but are not limited to:
Starts, operates and stops manually controlled equipment, including chemical pumps, transfer pumps, clarifier drives, sand filters, and air blowers Maintains, checks and lubricates aerator blowers, diffusers and pumps. Exercises and lubricates valves. Monitors plant conditions for proper chemical feeds. Cleans, changes or replaces bar screen and comminutor, aeration tanks, secondary clarifiers, sewer and scum tanks, pumps, valves, air filters, flow meter charts, flow Parshall flumes, sand filters, anti-foam equipment, decks, weirs and troughs. Checks operation of ultraviolet disinfection unit and cleans debris from same. Maintains good housekeeping in the control room and lab, equipment rooms, restrooms and remainder of plant. Maintains the plant in a clean and orderly manner. Calculates items such as flows, pH and temperatures daily- weekly and monthly. Makes up necessary reagents to conduct analytical tests. Experience:
A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
The work performed requires walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, sitting, crouching, climbing ladders, stairs and steps. Must have good eyesight and hearing.The incumbent must also be able to lift weights of up to fifty pounds. Moderate effort is required to operate valves and controls, and to reposition heavy hoses and pumps as necessary. When performing repairs or making installations or performing preventive maintenance, the incumbent is required to use both hands above the head as well as below the shoulders. The operator is required to enter confined spaces when cleaning and inspecting clarifiers, contact tanks, aeration tanks, and sand filters. The incumbent is exposed to contact with sewage, high voltage, and heavy duty equipment. The incumbent is required to work around moving machinery. Cuts, bruises, and broken bones may result from accidents while working around tanks, machinery and equipment. The incumbent works generally outdoors, subject to all prevailing weather conditions. He is exposed to adverse weather conditions, dangers with chemicals and open tanks.
