Supervisory Police Officer (Instructor)

The incumbent is assigned duties that would normally be the responsibility of the Chief of Public Safety Service. The incumbent assists the Chief of Police in the management of the service, including budget preparation, human resource management, as well as the acquisition of supplies and equipment for department use. The incumbent works closely with representatives of various administrative support services in the management of program monies, personnel, supplies, equipment, and space. The incumbent attends and provides data to the Life Safety Committee, the Environment of Care Committee (EOC), occasionally attends the Director Staff meetings, and provides written reports to the Associate Director of all criminal activity on Medical Center grounds. The Training Officer's time is divided between Training (60%), Supervision (30%), and General Patrol Duties (10%). The primary purpose of this position is for the incumbent to assign, direct, and review the work of subordinate officers; plan and carry out the training of subordinate officers in training topics; and evaluate assigned line officer's work performance, regardless of work shift or location. Specialized
Experience:
You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-8 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
providing knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property; training subordinate officers in a classroom setting, preparing lectures and handouts and utilizing audio-visual equipment as part of the training; fostering police community relations by exercising a high degree of skill in meeting and dealing with different types of customers; planning, scheduling and coordinating the work of shift officers with regard to work operations, independently solving problems with regard to the work supervised. Physical Requirements:
The incumbent is required to exert considerable and strenuous physical effort on a regular basis while performing the functions of the position. These functions are normally performed while the incumbent conducts security surveys and inspections which require crawling in unusually confined building areas and construction sites. At times the incumbent may be called upon to defend himself and others against physical attack from patients, visitors or individuals with criminal intent. Working Conditions:
Work settings subject the incumbent to regular and recurring exposure to moderate discomforts. He/she is subject to all types of environmental factors (i.e., excessive heat, cold, rain, and snow). Incumbent is routinely exposed to toxic fumes, smoke, and gas as well as possible exposure to biological or contaminated material. There is the potential for dangerous situations to occur at VA facilities. Several of NJ's facilities are in large metropolitan areas and members of the public have easy access to the installations. In the course of supervising protective and investigative activities, the incumbent is at risk from assault by persons with or without weapons while attempting to prevent crimes or make arrests. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
